This much-loved nightspot was to go through several incarnations before it closed at the end of last year but to a generation of clubbers it will always be Baileys – and 50 years ago this week it was preparing to host a future winner of the Eurovision Song Contest.
A Watford Observer photographer took these snaps of the exterior of the nightclub and neighbouring Caters supermarket on November 22, 1974.
Beneath the ‘Baileys disco cabaret’ sign and above the doors was another sign advertising the forthcoming acts due to be performing at the venue and ‘this week’ it was the turn of Brotherhood of Man.
It was to be another 18 months before the British pop group achieved their major breakthrough by winning the 1976 Eurovision Song Contest with ‘Save Your Kisses for Me’, but they were due on stage at Baileys before comedian Ken Goodwin was the star turn the following week.
As well as Baileys and Caters, some readers may recall the other businesses in these archive photos – a branch of the Leicester Building Society and Baileys television and radio shop.
