The reason why a secondary school was unable to open today has been confirmed.

Yesterday (November 17), Rickmansworth School announced that it would be closed on Monday due to “unforeseen circumstances”.

It did not specify the exact cause of the closure, saying that parents would receive updates and further information via email.

The Scots Hill secondary school has since explained to the Watford Observer that it is due to a “major water leak” in its central heating system.

Leaders have been working with external contractors to resolve the issue but said that the school had to shut for health and safety reasons, to protect students and staff.

The initial announcement, posted to Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) yesterday afternoon, stated: “The school will be closed tomorrow due to unforeseen circumstances.

“Parents, please check your email today and tomorrow for further updates and information.

“Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

It is unclear whether Rickmansworth School will be able to open tomorrow, it has been contacted for more information. Update to follow.
