A long-awaited rebuilt petrol station is set to open “soon” as work nears completion.
Shell's garage by The Dome roundabout in North Watford closed on December 10, 2022, after it confirmed that a full site rebuild was to take place within two years.
The structure was knocked down pretty quickly but motorists were left confused for a time as no visible progress on its replacement could be seen more than a year later.
The site apparently had to be closed for the “extended period of time” to perform “necessary remediation works” and demolish all existing structures before building could start.
Earlier this year, Shell told the Watford Observer that it expected works to be completed “by the end of November”.

Waitrose, which operated a Little Waitrose convenience store there, said that it would be in contact with Shell once works were near completion as it still had “a number of years” on its lease.
Waitrose-branded “coming soon” signs are now visible outside the site, suggesting works are progressing well and the Little Waitrose will be returning.
The new petrol station is set to have a bigger shop, a Karcher car wash, EV charge points, and the same number of fuelling positions for both cars and trucks as before.
