Firefighters had to tackle an unattended bonfire and respond to controlled burnings on Guy Fawkes Day.

Throughout November 5, Herts Fire and Rescue shared updates via its Herts Fire Control account on X (formerly Twitter) as it was called to various reports.

This included a bonfire that had been left unattended in Bournehall Road, Bushey, that required a crew from Watford Fire Station to put it out after being reported at 3.12pm.

There were also false alarms in Watford, including a ‘van smoking’ in St Albans Road at 1.13pm which was attended by a crew from Garston, and a report of a fire in the open in Granfield Avenue at 4.42pm which was attended by firefighters from the same station.

Another fire in the open was reported in Hilfield Lane South, Bushey, at 6.41pm, but turned out to be a controlled burning when Watford firefighters arrived.

A reported unattended bonfire in Bucknalls Drive, Bricket Wood, also ended up being controlled burning after a Kings Langley crew was called out at 7.08pm.

The service also shared its response to several incidents elsewhere in the county and carried out a training operation at Batchwood Hall in St Albans over the night.

In advice on Monday (November 4), Herts Fire and Rescue urged members of the public to “leave fireworks to the professionals” and attend organised events rather than creating displays at home.
