One eyewitness - who has requested to be kept anonymous - said that the fire was well under way when they arrived at the scene.
They reported seeing large amounts of smoke and debris, speculating that an electric bike had "gone wrong".
Reader Sam Mills claimed that the bike "exploded" in the underpass.
On social media, one user claimed there was "nothing left" of the bike when they walked past a short time after the incident.
Several pictures have emerged of firefighters dealing with the blaze while onlookers gathered nearby.
Police and the fire service have been contacted for more details. Updates to follow.
