A new law is set to "improve" the lives of around 1,600 local workers by banning zero-hours contracts, Watford's MP has said.
The government's Employment Rights Bill, supported by 386 MPs, aims to ban exploitative zero-hours contracts and the practice of 'fire and rehire,' where staff are sacked and rehired on worse terms.
The bill aims to introduce basic employment rights from the first day, including paternity, parental, and bereavement leave, and protection from unfair dismissal.
Watford's Labour MP Matt Turmaine, who backed the bill during late-night votes on Monday, said: "I campaigned for this ban during the general election and against ‘fire and rehire’ too, and to introduce basic employment rights from day one.
"Everyone in Watford and across Britain deserves basic rights and protections at work.
"These are real, practical improvements that are going to improve lives."
Mr Turmaine said analysis he has seen suggests around 1,600 local workers will benefit from the ban on zero-hours contracts.
He said the new bill and measures will also make flexible working the norm where practical; deliver stronger dismissal protections for pregnant women and new mothers; establish a new Fair Work Agency to enforce holiday pay; and strengthen statutory sick pay.
