A best-selling author has launched a new scheme to help homeless people's pets.

Animal lover Jane Fallon attended New Hope's drop-in centre at the Haven on Whippendell Road in Watford to launch the scheme which will help the pets of those experiencing homelessness.

Jane Fallon said: "I love this initiative. Homeless people want to care for their pets the same way the rest of us do and will often give them priority over their own wellbeing."

New Hope, a charity which helps rough sleepers in Watford, has teamed up with StreetVet - a national charity which provides free veterinary care to homeless people's pets.

They have launched the new accredited day centre scheme to provide the pets with the care they need.

Debby McKinlay, manager at the Haven, said: "We are delighted to partner with StreetVet in their trial accreditation scheme for day centres.

"I know first-hand how important pets are in reducing the feeling of loneliness and boosting our mood.

"We want to ensure that both person and pet receive the care they need and this partnership with StreetVet will enable us to make sure that precious companions have access to the first class help they need."

Laura Sayer, the hostel manager at StreetVet, added: "New Hope’s Haven provides an essential humanitarian aid service for those experiencing homelessness in the Watford area and through our accreditation we hope that those experiencing homelessness with pets can access their vital services and utilise the benefits StreetVet can offer."
