A cyclist has been airlifted to hospital after being hit by a car in Hertfordshire this morning.

The collision involved a man in his 40s and a red Kia Rio near the Redbourn Road roundabout on the A5183, Redbourn, at 7.25am.

Herts Police and the East of England Ambulance Service attended before the man was taken to hospital via air ambulance.

A spokesperson for Herts Police said: "Police were called at around 7.25am to reported of a road traffic collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.

"The incident occurred on the roundabout near the Redbourn MOT Centre.

"The East of England Ambulance Service and the Air Ambulance Service have also attended the scene."

Diversions have been put in place whilst the incident is being dealt with, they added.

A spokesperson for the East of England Ambulance Service said: “We were called just after 7.20am with reports that a man had been hit by a car on the A5183 roundabout near Redbourn.

"An ambulance, rapid response vehicle and the East Anglian Air Ambulance were sent to the scene. The man was airlifted to The Royal London Hospital in a serious condition.”

Following the crash, police are appealing for information, witnesses and dash cam footage.

A statement from Herts Police read: "At around 7.20am, the cyclist on an electronically assisted pedal bicycle has fallen from the bicycle and onto the roundabout, before a collision occurred with a red Kia Rio.

"The cyclist, a man in his forties, sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital via Air Ambulance with multiple injuries that require ongoing treatment."

Police Sergeant Matt O’Neill, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit, said: “We’ve been carrying out enquiries since the collision this morning and I am now appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to get in touch. This includes anyone who also saw the events leading up to the collision.

“I would also like to hear from anybody who may have caught what happened on dash cam.

No arrests have currently been made and investigations are continuing.
