A consultation has been launched to get residents opinions on plans for 4,000 new homes to built on a 975-acre site in Hemel Hempstead.

The East Hemel site lies between Redbourn Road and Hemel Hempstead Road, and represents an attractive site for developers to build new homes, schools and health facilities.

The proposals are at an early stage, with the Crown Estate opening the first stage of its 'public engagement' this month.

A formal planning application is expected to be submitted to St Albans and Dacorum Councils next October.

On its website, the company makes the case for the development, saying: "Hertfordshire, like the rest of the UK, needs more and better quality housing.

"We are committed to delivering a more diverse, affordable and better designed mix of housing to suit people’s different budgets and life stages."

Under the proposals, roughly 4,000 homes will be built, as well as 1.8m square feet of commercial space.

It is claimed this will create thousands of new jobs, skills and training opportunities.

It adds that it is "committed to working together with the community and has invited the public to comment.
