This site is now home to a superstore but in the 1960s it was the location of a showroom selling gas-powered appliances for the home.

The Watford Observer has again teamed up with its friends at Watford Museum to look back at structures, objects or businesses from the town’s past that have either disappeared or been relocated and this week we look back at this 60-year-old view of The Dome roundabout.

The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “This view, of what today is the Asda side of The Dome roundabout, shows there used to be a gas holder and gas showroom here.

“I understand that all sorts of products for the home could be purchased in the showroom including gas-powered fridges and irons.

“This image is from around 1964 when the whole roundabout was manicured with small flower beds. Now we also have mature trees and bushes.

“The gas holder and showroom are gone but you can still see Odhams clock tower.”
