This lovely picture is more than a century old but it is not known where it was taken from.

The Watford Observer is delighted to share pictures from the archive at Watford Museum and this week we look back at this view of Leavesden.

The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “This wonderful rural scene was photographed more than 100 years ago.

“The caption on the image tells me this is ‘Ganders Ash, Leavesden’, but I have not been able to work out where the view was photographed from.

“I wonder if the white building in the centre, with the horse and cart opposite, was either a shop or a pub.

“I don’t think it can be the original Hammer in Hand pub though, as that one was on the High Road, and the road in Leavesden, named ‘Ganders Ash’, didn’t exist when the photo was taken.”
