The founders of a popular village race were honoured as hundreds of runners enjoyed the good weather and helped raise what organisers hope will be a “wonderful amount” for a breast cancer appeal.

The Abbots Langley Tough 10 committee surprised Reg Hunt at Sunday’s 42nd race day with a bench dedicated to him and the late George Harrison, who were both founder members of the event in 1983.

Some of the former police officer’s family were there to join him for the occasion and his grandson, Sam, finished seventh in the 10k.

Almost 400 runners took to the start line for the 3k, 5k and 10k runs, while at least 200 children competed in a 1k parkrun.

Watford FC legends Luther Blissett and Ian Bolton were joined by the chair of Abbots Langley Parish Council Jane Lay to start each race, with Matthew Robins winning the main 10k event in 35:01.

“We hope that we have raised a wonderful amount of money to give out at our presentation evening in January 2025,” said Tough 10 committee secretary Alison Warner. “Our main beneficiary this year is RAISE, the West Herts Hospitals Charity, who are hoping to raise £200,000 to fund two Savi Scouts for our local breast clinic in St Albans.”
