The Draconid meteor shower will peak across Watford this week seeing the skies light up in a glorious display.

Stargazers always enjoy the annual celestial event which happens when Earth passes through the debris left behind by Comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner.

The debris hits the planet's atmosphere and burns up because of the friction, creating streaks of light across the night sky.

The Draconid meteor shower will be visible across Watford until Thursday, October 10, with its peak on the evening of Tuesday, October 8.

How to see the Draconid meteor shower

If you want to see the Perseid meteor shower, then the Royal Museum Greenwich has offered some advice on how best to see it.

To get the best view, you'll need to get away from light pollution, which may mean you'll need to travel a bit out of your way.

If you lay down or sit to watch the shower, ensure your feet are facing southeast for the best view.

Additionally, make sure to turn off phones and torches 15 minutes before to allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness.

The rate of meteors during the shower's peak depends upon which part of the comet's trail the Earth's orbit intersects on any given year.

"In recent years, the Draconids have not produced any particular outbursts in activity.

"However, in 1933 and 1946 the Draconid meteor shower produced some of the most active displays of the 20th century."
