This shop has long gone but its former use lives on in the name of the buildings that replaced it.
The Watford Observer is delighted to share pictures from the archive at Watford Museum and this week we look back at a wine and spirits shop.
The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “When the rear of this St Albans Road building was photographed from Church Road, it was a wine and spirits retailer called Victoria Stores and had belonged to Benskin’s Brewery - people might remember the shop at a later date when it was known as Victoria Wine.
“Originally c.1850, there was a brewery here started by Samuel Roate and by 1901 it was a wine and spirit merchant named Burr.
“The brewing theme continues today as the shop, now flats along with some new buildings, are named Brewery Mews.”
