Forensics teams are currently inspecting the shell of a car in Abbots Langley – which is being linked with this morning’s fatal Kings Langley shooting.
What appears to be the remnants of a white Volkswagen Golf mounted on pavement under trees was being investigated in Furtherfield at around 1.30pm.
Police received reports of the vehicle ablaze at 12.45am after a man in his 30s was shot in Railway Terrace around 15 minutes earlier.
The victim was found seriously injured and pronounced dead shortly after, the force said.
A murder probe has been launched and no arrests have been made, with police currently in both areas as enquiries continue.
Furtherfield resident Shikha Ahuja, 42, recalled hearing a car during an "unusual" incident between 12.30am and 1am - during which she heard what she believed was a car door being closed several times.
"Then it happened a third time, I peaked out the window and there was a white car which was going, stopping, going, stopping – not sure what was happening and then suddenly it stopped at this junction.”
She then went to sleep as she thought they may be waiting for someone before seeing the news this morning.
Kings Langley residents voiced their shock, with one 80-year-old telling the Watford Observer: “I heard the shooting, but I didn’t know it was a shooting. I thought it was a car backfiring ‘bang, bang, bang, bang’. I heard people shouting, ‘get out of the road’.”
A 26-year-old whose car is stuck within the cordon said he was “woken up by gunshots” at 12.30am, before hearing a car “screeching off” and seeing a man in the middle of the road.
Detective Chief Inspector Nick Gardner said: “This is a tragic loss of life, and our thoughts are very much with the victim’s family at this time.
“As part of our investigation we are appealing for any witnesses, CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage from the Railway Terrace and surrounding areas at the time of the incident."
Three Rivers Chief Inspector Andrew Palfreyman added: “We believe this was an isolated incident and there is not believed to be a wider threat to the public.
“I appreciate this will have concerned local members of the community and you can expect to see an increased police presence in the area and additional patrols."
