There was "mayhem" congestion this morning due to roadworks that are set to continue for weeks.

Temporary lights are in place at the junction of Eastbury Road and Deacons Hill, near Oxhey Park, while Hertfordshire County Council has been refurbishing the permanent traffic signals since September 4.

Traffic data from Google Maps shows there are delays for hundreds of metres approaching the junction, but no respite is in sight as the roadworks are due to continue for over two more weeks until Friday, October 4.

One resident branded it “carnage” as all the lights were reportedly stuck on red at around 6am this morning (September 16), forcing staff to direct cars through by hand.

Another added: “Anyone planning to go to Watford or Bushey please add another 25 minutes to your journey, absolute mayhem this morning! When will these temporary lights be gone?”

(Image: One Network) Others questioned why the works had started at the same time as schools returning in September, as one commented: "It was awful in the other direction towards Northwood as well, again due to temporary traffic lights which looked as though they were stuck on red!

"Not exactly a nice way to start the day for my son who was worried and stressed that he'd be late for school, even though we left extra early."

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire County Council said: “We’d like to apologise for the congestion around the Eastbury Road and Deacons Hill junction this morning. Unfortunately there was a technical glitch with the temporary traffic lights at the junction, where we are carrying out works to refurbish the permanent traffic lights.

"We know that these works are disruptive, but the work we are carrying out will ensure smoother and more reliable journeys in the future."
