Striking videos have captured a WWII-era bomber flying above South Oxhey.
The Avro Lancaster PA474 bomber flew over the estate yesterday evening (September 12) at around 7.10pm as part of a series of RAF “Battle of Britain Memorial Flights” over the next couple of days.
The plane, built in 1945, departed from the RAF Station Northolt in Ruislip at around 7pm before flying south of Watford and across North London to land at Southend Airport at 7.31pm.
Residents shared videos online of it passing over their gardens and houses as the plane's multiple engines could be heard from far away.
One South Oxhey local said: “Just heard that, then saw the back end as it flew over the flat! Great sound the four Merlin engines made!”
Another commented: "We saw it, made me think of all the air shows with my Dad."
Those who missed the flypast were “gutted”, although there are more chances to see the WWII-era plane on flights taking place around the country tonight, and over the weekend. The full details are available on the Military Airshows website.
The Lancaster bomber missed the chance to take part in active service when it was completed on May 31, 1945, but became an RAF display aircraft in 1968 and began to take part in airshows around the country.
