There are not many places in Watford where one architecturally significant building has given way to another – but this High Street corner is certainly one.

The Watford Observer has again teamed up with its friends at Watford Museum to look back at structures, objects or businesses from the town’s past that have either disappeared or been relocated and this week we look back at two distinctive buildings at the same location.

The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “One very distinctive building in High Street at the corner of Water Lane has been replaced by a similarly distinctive, but architecturally different building.

“In the black and white photo taken by Bob Nunn, the building with the large wall sign had been occupied by Hammonds since the early 1970s - people may remember getting their first musical instrument from here.

“By the 1990s it had been demolished and, in its place, a blue glass pyramid constructed. I think the first business here was Blockbuster video.”
