Watford Grammar School for Boys has submitted plans to expand part of its site.

The James Theatre – part of a two-storey block which is also used by the English department and school canteen – is currently hampered by a lack of changing and storage space.

Currently, backstage space is “extremely limited” and an English classroom has to be used temporarily for productions.

The new extension would include two dressing rooms, washing facilities and storage space for costumes and props. The school said it would “immeasurably” improve the theatre’s performance.

The school’s application, submitted to Watford Borough Council, said: “It would also provide an opportunity to improve the aesthetic appeal of the Shepherds Road entrance and raise the profile of drama in the same way that the Clarendon Muse projects the importance of music to the School.”

It said the current appearance of the building, which was built in the 1970s, is “drab” and “unwelcoming”.

Permission for the extension is required because the main school building, opened in 1912, is Grade II listed. The application said the main building would not be affected by the proposed extension.

The school said the theatre “provides a dedicated space for performing arts … an asset which we are privileged to have and one which ensures both student performers and the audience gain a real professional theatre experience”.
