This picture recalls a time before big changes were made to Watford’s road system, including some major routes being widened.

The Watford Observer is delighted to share pictures from the archive at Watford Museum and this week we look back to this view of Station Road.

The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “This scene of Station Road looks in the St Albans Road direction - the building beyond the streetlight is on the corner of Langley Road.

“This photo was taken in the late 1950s or early 1960s and before St Albans Road was widened when the end pair of houses were demolished.

“At the time of this photo, the houses still have their brick-built garden walls or hedges and, apart from the business details painted on the windows, they could all still be private homes.

“Parking on the street was permitted and there doesn't appear to be traffic lights at the road's end either.”
