A teenage golf prodigy from Ghana has been brought to the UK by a Watford charity and supported while competing in Herts tournaments.

Afi Amezado, 16, is staying in town with her aunty Rhoda as KitAid continues to support her since she won the Ghanaian Junior Championships aged 14.

Rhoda said: “I am grateful for the opportunity, golf is usually for rich people and there was no way people like Afi could get close to golf without their support.

“She comes from a family of eight all sleeping in one single room container, here she is living in heaven.”

Rhoda described watching her niece play golf as “beautiful” regardless of the result and is “proud” of the Watford community for coming together in support of Afi.

Last week the golfing prodigy played at The Grove, and in the coming weeks she has eight more tournaments to compete in. In between events, West Herts Golf Club is allowing her to practice at its facilities.

KitAid, in collaboration with charities W3RT and Ngorli, has also been providing Watford FC kits for Afi and her community in Ghana since 2017.

The charity's founder Derrick Williams MBE said: “It’s not just us, everyone is doing their bit to help Afi.

“A project we supported in Ghana arranged for the kids to have a try out session at golf. They had never heard of golf, and most couldn’t hit the ball, but Afi immediately stood out."

Afi was invited to play in the World Junior Championship in Scotland in July, but her visa came late so she could not compete. However, KitAid stepped in and arranged for her to play in junior tournaments across Hertfordshire.

Rhoda said: "Without KitAid and the other charities our paths would not have crossed. Now she's here I'm happy I can finally socialise with my niece."

In September she will return to Ghana to finish school, but her aunty said she "prays" Afi will return to the UK and pursue a golfing career.
