Firefighters raced to a South Oxhey school after a freezer caught fire in the early hours of the morning.

Residents raised questions online after “loads of sirens” were heard heading towards the area this morning (August 19), and firefighters and police were spotted at Greenfields Primary School in Ellesborough Close.

When they arrived alongside officers from Hertfordshire Police, firefighters found smoke coming out of a ground floor corridor.

It is believed to have started in a freezer in the school's utility storeroom and was extinguished by 7.13am.

Greenfields Primary School is currently closed for the summer holidays and there were no injuries reported.

Herts Assistant Chief Fire Officer Mark Barber said: “I’d like to thank our crews for their quick and professional response to the fire at a school in Oxhey this morning – their response will have prevented more extensive damage.

“Colleagues in our fire control room dispatched fire engines from Watford and Garston and firefighters were able to put out the fire within minutes.

"Thanks to the prompt actions of our firefighters the fire, which was believed to have been started in a freezer, was contained to a utility storeroom and the rest of the building was unaffected.”
