Pets Pantry, 20th Century Video and Langley Garden and Flower Centre – these were just three of the shops customers could visit in a village high street in the 1980s.

A Watford Observer photographer visited Kings Langley in November 1987 and took these photos of some of the shops in High Street.

While many of the buildings appear largely unaltered, a lot of the shops and businesses that occupy them have changed since these images were captured.

Pets Pantry stood between Langley Upholstery, which advertised ‘English Workmanship At Its Best’ on a sign above the entrance, and neighbouring branches of National Westminster and Lloyds banks. Next to those was a wine and beer shop named The Age of Wine.

Watching the latest movie releases on video was a popular form of entertainment around that time and Kings Langley had its own video rental shop located next to Flatt & Mead estate agents.
