Firefighters tackled a “huge” blaze at a golf club which saw customers evacuated and groundskeeping machinery destroyed.

A Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said they were called at 6.30pm yesterday (August 5) after a fire broke out at the Little Hay Golf Complex in Bovingdon.

Five engines were sent to the Box Lane blaze, which took until around 9pm to put out.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the club said: “We experienced a fire yesterday; thankfully, everyone is safe. The fire department is currently investigating the incident.

“As a result, our driving range will be closed for the next day or two. However, please note that the golf course and clubhouse remain open.

“We understand that this is an inconvenience, and we appreciate your understanding and support during this time.”

Bovingdon residents reported seeing multiple fire engines heading to tackle the “huge” blaze, while one customer shared videos of smoke billowing out of a metal shed in the grounds.

The fire reportedly broke out in a groundskeeper’s facility and all the club’s maintenance machinery was lost in the blaze, according to the Bovingdon Villager. The Little Hay Golf Complex has been contacted for more information.

Assistant chief fire officer Mark Barber said: “This was a difficult fire for our firefighters to tackle, and a poor water supply meant we had to bring in a water bowser and high-volume pump.

"Our crews also faced a number of hazards in the building, and I’d like to thank the firefighters who bravely worked to bring the fire under control."
