Permission has been given for a new “world class” golf facility at a luxury hotel near Watford.

Three Rivers District Council approved the Grove’s proposals on Friday (August 2), after some small amendments during the planning process.

The designs, submitted in May, include a new building next to the hotel’s driving range which would offer three training rooms, as well as an equipment facility for fitting and testing personalised golf clubs.

Documents said the addition would “reflect the commitment of the hotel to uphold its exceptional standards with respect to the quality and profile of its golf offering".

“This will ensure a unique and unparalleled experience for golf enthusiasts and professionals visiting the hotel,” they added.

The Grove’s course has been rated the top golf resort in England and number 71 globally by the Golf World Rankings. It has welcomed many famous faces, including Tiger Woods - who won the World Golf Championship there in 2006.

The hotel also now has permission to create a formal reception at the “ad hoc” metal container building for its archery and axe throwing activities.

It had said the works would represent “proportionate” additions to the hotel in “discrete” locations, which would not impact the green belt setting or clash with the hotel’s Grade II listed mansion house.
