Highways officers have confirmed the main section of a major road, recently named Watford’s most dangerous for cyclists, will be resurfaced later this year.

Earlier this week, it was shared that A412 St Albans Road will have its carriageway resurfaced from The Dome roundabout to Longspring and from Bedford Street to West Street between August 28 and September 5.

Confirmation came after the road, previously described as “pothole city” by councillors, was revealed to have seen the most accidents involving cyclists of any road in town, and the third most in the county. It had previously been feared that the road would not be resurfaced until 2025.

The junctions with Leggatts Wood Avenue, Brixton Road, and Balmoral Road emerged as crash hotspots. Of those, only the Leggatts Wood Avenue junction was within the area set for resurfacing.

North Watford county councillor Asif Khan said he welcomed the work but pushed for confirmation that the rest of the road to get the same treatment.

The Labour councillor has now shared the official response, explaining that the main section, between Balmoral Road and Bedford Street will be resurfaced this year.

It is expected to be completed in October, with specific road closure dates to be confirmed closer to the time.

Highways officers apparently deliberately left the section out to accommodate planned drainage works set to take place there in early October.

Otherwise, they explained, they would be digging up their own newly constructed road surface.
