Many readers will walk or drive past this church on a regular basis but may be less familiar seeing it from the angle shown in this picture.

The Watford Observer is delighted to share pictures from the archive at Watford Museum and this week we are sharing this image of Holy Rood church.

The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “Today, the area around Holy Rood church is more built up than it was when photographer Frederick Downer took this image – one of many he used to create postcards of the local area. These showed general scenes or notable events such as heavy rains.

“In this photo, the architectural style makes it recognisable as Holy Rood but not from the Exchange Road angle that most of us are familiar with.

“The Exchange Road/Market Street crossroads did not exist at that time, so this view is at the junction of Market Street and Percy Road.”
