An aerodrome said it was "excited" as it shared more details on plans for a new 2,300 square metre helicopter hangar near Watford.

London Elstree Aerodrome has partnered with the multinational helicopter manufacturer Leonardo to build a new facility to the north of its airfield in Hogg Lane.

The bespoke hangar will measure 2,300 square metres and be used to carry out maintenance on up to four helicopter bays, as well as providing office space and workshops.

A spokesperson for London Elstree Aerodrome said: "We are excited about this partnership and feel confident that it will be a positive development for the local economy"

Reacting to the news, one resident said: “The current batch of noisy helicopters and light aircraft fly very low and very noisily over Garston. This will inevitably cause more nuisance.”

But the aerodrome spokesperson stressed that the maintenance facility would create “very few” extra flights with an expected increase of air traffic of less than 0.5 per cent.

Plans have been submitted under permitted development to Hertsmere Borough Council, although they are not yet viewable on the planning portal.

If approved, the aerodrome hopes to begin construction in the autumn with works expected to take roughly 12 months.

Residents were invited to view the plans at a consultation last Wednesday, July 24, with Conservative county councillor Caroline Clapper calling the proposals a "significant development".
