Resurfacing for two stretches of a major road that was recently named Watford’s most dangerous for cyclists has been set.

From The Dome roundabout to Longspring and from Bedford Street to West Street, A412 St Albans Road will have its carriageway resurfaced between August 28 and September 5.

Works will be carried out under a road closure from 8pm to 5am each day, with a midnight “noise curfew”. During these times the road will need to be clear of parked cars and junctions will not be accessible.

The resurfacing is “weather dependent” and so may be postponed if poor weather is forecast.

St Albans Road saw 16 accidents involving a bicycle last year, according to freedom of information requests sent to Hertfordshire Police by eye surgery experts OCL Vision.

The data, revealed earlier this month, placed it as the most dangerous road for cyclists in Watford and among the top three in Hertfordshire.

The junctions with Leggatts Wood Avenue, Brixton Road and Balmoral Road emerged as crash hotspots. Of those, only the Leggatts Wood Avenue junction is within the area set for resurfacing.

North Watford county councillor Asif Khan said: “I have been working hard with Herts Highways to ensure that St Albans Road gets resurfaced as it deserves.

“I welcome these sections are going to be resurfaced, but I have asked for dates when the worse condition between Balmoral Road and Bedford Street will be resurfaced.”
