Drivers are set for even more traffic chaos as the M25 will close for another weekend this summer, National Highways has confirmed.

The UK’s busiest motorway has already shut three times this year as part of a £317 million project to improve Junction 10 in Surrey, with two planned closures left to come in 2024.

National Highways has now confirmed there will be another weekend between “now and this autumn”, although the exact date has not yet been announced. The M25 closure and diversion route last weekend. The M25 closure and diversion route last weekend. (Image: PA)

The most recent works took place last weekend and saw the AA warn drivers to expect delays as major roads would be “incredibly busy” around the 10-mile diversion route.

During the next closure, three bridges around the junction will be demolished and three new ones will be installed, including a "heathland" bridge to allow pedestrians and wildlife to cross the motorway.

The same five-mile stretch of the motorway is expected to be closed with a similar 10-mile diversion route through Surrey A-roads.

The three-year project is due to be completed in summer 2025 and will “reduce congestion, create a smoother flow of traffic and provide safer journeys for thousands every day”, according to National Highways.

When the M25 shut in March, it was the first planned daytime shutdown of the UK's busiest motorway since it opened in 1986.
