Redevelopment plans for the former Watford Police Station have been pushed back as residents will have to wait to find out the town centre site's future.

The application for the 1.75-acre Clarendon Road plot was due in late May or early June, but the Watford Observer now understands it will be submitted by residential developer McLaren Living within the next few weeks.

Preliminary documents have so far revealed that four new towers could reach 22 storeys and would provide around 320 flats, ranging from studios to three-bedroom homes.

If the plans go ahead, they would place the proposed “mixed-use” estate among the tallest buildings in Watford, alongside the 25-storey Clarendon tower under construction just down the street.

The developer purchased the site last year when Herts Police moved to their new George Street headquarters after 83 years, as the previous Shady Lane station was no longer "fit for purpose" and required "costly maintenance".
