King Charles III has recognised a Girl Guides leader for her four decades of service to young people in his 2024 Birthday Honours list.

Leader of the 1st Radlett Rangers and Anglia trainer Verity Maclachlan told of her "immense pride" as she was awarded an MBE by His Majesty the King.

She joined the Girl Guides as a "Brownie" in Derbyshire at age 9 and became a volunteer for the organisation in Scotland in 1984 before joining the Radlett branch as a Guide and Ranger leader.

“My finest memories stem from walking trips and international trips with Girlguiding, since I particularly enjoy introducing people to the outdoors.”

The 75-year-old has used her experience working in healthcare to provide first-aid training to community groups across the Anglia region and has helped install defibrillators around the Radlett area.

She added: “As a cardiac nurse I’ve seen too many situations where friends or family didn’t know how to help someone who had collapsed.”

Girlguiding is the UK’s largest dedicated to girls with around 385,000 members from the ages four to 18 and almost 80,000 volunteers who organise the groups.
