A driver is fighting for his life after he was involved in a crash on the M1 yesterday (June 10).

The collision, involving a white Mercedes HGV and a grey Volkswagen Polo, happened at 5.45pm, a short distance from the southbound exit slip road at junction 10 near Luton.

A full closure of the main northbound carriageway and a partial closure of the southbound carriageway was put in place for around one hour while emergency services attended the scene.

The Polo driver, a man in his 30s, was airlifted to hospital, where he remains in a life-threatening condition.

Bedfordshire Police are appealing for witnesses.

Sergeant Timothy Davies, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Roads Policing Unit, said: "We are asking drivers who were travelling along this section of the M1 at the time of the incident and witnessed the collision to please get in touch.

"We are particularly interested in any dashcam footage that captured the incident, or the events leading up to it."

The driver of the white Mercedes HGV, a 40-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
