“Paul McCartney” has made an online donation towards a charity’s new reflection garden in the town.

Watford Mencap has launched the JustGiving page ‘Let's build a Mencap reflection garden for happy, healthy lives’ with a £10,000 target in mind.

What it did not expect was to receive a £50 donation this afternoon (June 10), with £12.50 gift aid, from an account under the Beatle’s name, with the following message: “Wonderful idea, Turn an “empty garden” into a place full of love … (And love is all you need).”

The learning disabilities charity’s fundraising manager, Michelle Hamilton, said: “We’ve got some fabulous friends who are supporting project.

“We echo the sentiment that love is all you need but donations are also always welcome.”

The garden has been designed by Tim Jennings for the RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival but after it finishes, in mid-July, the landscape designer wants to donate it to Watford Mencap.

Funds will go towards the cost of relocating the garden to the Watford Mencap hub, planting, creating a wildlife pond, and constructing an oak pergola.

Watford Mencap CEO Jane Pattinson said: “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring this wonderful garden to our community.

“We are certain that the people we support will enjoy its peacefulness and be stimulated by its sensory elements for many years to come.”
