Plans for a large solar farm outside Watford could be scrapped after an even bigger scheme was blocked by the government.

Renewable energy developer Enso Energy has applied to Hertsmere Borough Council to withdraw its application for a facility between Radlett and Elstree, according to a decision published last week.

It is not currently clear if the developer intends to resubmit the plans in future. Enso Energy was contacted for comment.

Enso had lodged two similar applications for the same site which would have seen thousands of solar panels, battery storage and underground cables built on two Green Belt sites, one north west of the Elstree Aerodrome and another west of the A5183 Watling Street.

The larger scheme had been at the appeal stage since late 2022 before it was finally shot down by the Planning Inspectorate on April 8. Now the second similar but slightly smaller application has officially been withdrawn.
