An unexpected road closure is causing chaos as motorists drive on the wrong side of the road and buses skip villages.
Cadent Gas was planning to deal with a gas leak in the footway by Scots Hill, Croxley Green, but excavation revealed that the issue was beneath the carriageway.
What was already an “emergency job” then required urgently upgraded traffic management and the road was shut westbound, Hertfordshire County Council explained.

Police in Three Rivers have received multiple reports of motorists ignoring the road closed signs while the work is carried out.
A Herts Police spokesperson said: “Any motorist found to be contravening the closed road, driving on a closed road or found to be driving on the wrong side of the road will run the risk of being prosecuted for driving offences such as reckless and careless driving.”
Buses have been left in disarray. The 322 is terminating at the stop by the Sportsman pub, in Scots Hill, while 336-service journeys that serve Chorleywood are skipping every stop from Watford Queens Avenue to Rickmansworth Railway Station.
Service 724 will not serve stops from Croxley Green Two Bridges to Rickmansworth railway station while the 725 currently terminates at Croxley Green Bateman Road.
Cadent is hoping to have the road reopen by Monday (June 3), subject to no major engineering difficulties.
