Fishing and watching TV without a licence, driving while on the phone, and dodging rail fares landed these eight Watford people with fines.

Together, the residents have to pay a £3,460 total after appearing in court in April and May this year.

Samuil Purtan

After driving a Renault while not in a position to have proper control on the M1 in Barnet, Samuil Purtan, 30, was ordered to pay £342 at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on April 6.

Purtan, of Leavesden Road, had been looking down at a mobile phone to the bottom-right of the steering wheel on August 19, 2023.

Afua Ampah

Afua Ampah, 29, used a colour television set to watch or record live TV without a licence in August 2023.

Ampah, of Waterman Close, was ordered to pay £76 months and given a conditional discharge at St Albans Magistrates’ Court on May 1.

Ionut Bancila

Ionut Bancila "fished or took fish" without a licence at Tylers Common Fisheries, in Harold Wood, on October 7, 2023.

On April 26, the 35-year-old was fined £443 at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court.

Sophie Smith

Sophie Smith, of Cobb Green, boarded a train without a valid ticket between Leicester and Nottingham on November 9, 2023.

The 21-year-old was ordered to pay £446.60 at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court on April 17.

Zelpha Louise Chapman

Zelpha Louise Chapman, 50, had driven a Land Rover on the M25 in South Mimms on May 19, last year while using a mobile phone.

Chapman, of Elton Way, was ordered to pay £996 at Stevenage Magistrates’ Court on April 4.

Mark Harris

Mark Harris, of Jubilee Court, was ordered to pay £242.60 at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court on April 16.

He had got on a train without a ticket in New Barnet on August 27, last year.

Natalie Jeffery

Natalie Jeffery, 19, failed to produce a train ticket for a journey between Stratford and Norwich or pay the fare from the place the journey had started or give her name and address when required to on October 23 last year.

Jeffrey, of Desmond Road, was ordered to pay £563 at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court on April 22.

Francesca Denagoli

Francesca Denagoli, 25, was also fined at Barkingside Magistrates Court over a rail fare and was ordered to pay £350.80 on April 12.

Denagoli, of Middle Down, Aldenham, failed to hand over her ticket for inspection and verification of validity when asked to do so by and authorised person at Farringdon on September 14, last year.
