Two peregrine falcon chicks - the world's fastest bird - have been born at the top of a Watford hostel.

The YMCA Charter House announced yesterday, May 9, that a pair of birds hatched this week after laying four eggs on its roof in April.

“We welcomed the first couple of adorable chicks into the world this week!" the charity said. “We are keeping a lookout for the arrival of more fluffy additions to our falcon family.”

It has a livestream on its website of the special nesting tray placed at the site to accommodate the birds and one of the falcons can be seen huddled over the eggs.

Peregrine falcons were first spotted on the roof of the iconic building as early as 2014, according to the YMCA, but it was in 2017 that the birds were confirmed to have bred there for the first time in Hertfordshire.

At least 12 chicks are confirmed to have been born on the building since 2019. Last year a charity abseil was forced to change location from Charter House to atria Watford to protect a pair of the falcons nesting there.
