The underpass linking Cassio Road with Rickmansworth Road is part of everyday life for motorists in Watford but it was a very new experience for those behind the wheel when these pictures were taken around half a century ago.
A Watford Observer photographer captured these images in the early 1970s when the underpass had just opened.
The underpass took traffic past the Town Hall and towards Hempstead Road, St Albans Road and Beechen Grove.
- An unusual view of a Watford street from the past
- Recalling two Italian-style houses next to a hotel
- A busy day on the ring road almost 50 years ago
It was another big change to the fabric of the town during that period which included the construction of the ring road and the widening of Rickmansworth Road and St Albans Road into a dual carriageway.
