Thieves targeted two cars less than a mile apart within hours in Watford, sparking separate police appeals.
Police said suspect(s) stole a number plate from a grey Mercedes CLA Coupe parked at the Morrisons in Ascot Road on February 7, between 4.30pm and 5.30pm.
The victim reported reported it to officers but was unsure how it happened.
Just hours later, between 8.30pm and 9pm, a purple Mini Cooper was also broken into in Princes Avenue less than a mile away.

Items were stolen from the vehicle before whoever did it made off.
Police have been contacted over what items were taken and whether they are treating the incidents as connected.
Anyone with information, including CCTV or doorbell footage, has been asked to contact police via their website or non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 41/10893/24 for the Ascot Road incident and 41/10945/24 for the Princes Avenue theft.
