An 86-year-old stroke survivor has thanked swimming for regaining her independence after the life-threatening condition "changed everything."

Andrene Scott credits South Oxhey Leisure Centre's 'Swimming After a Stroke' programme for strengthening her left-hand side which had been paralysed.

Scott, who suffered a stroke ten years ago, had also battled breast cancer previously and suffers with restless leg syndrome.

She said: "My stroke changed everything - when I was discharged from hospital, I felt like I had lost all my confidence.

"Swimming After a Stroke has given me so much more independence to do everyday things, and I’m now able to do more than I ever could four years ago.

"I can also now swim 20 widths of the pool at a time, allowing myself a brief rest at each side, and close to 30 on a good day.

"I’d encourage anyone who’s had a stroke to try the sessions and see how they can help – you don’t realise how much gentle swimming exercises can benefit your mind and body."

The sessions welcome all stroke survivors known to a Stroke Association coordinator from Watford and Three Rivers.

The 12-week blocks cost £5.50 per class with more information available on Everyone Active's website or contact SouthOxheyInfo@everyoneactive.com.
