Thousands of people have spent the night without power after Storm Isha swept across the country bringing very strong winds and heavy rain last night - rekindling memories of an even more powerful storm that caused widespread damage to our area in the 1980s.
The Great Storm of 1987 happened on the night of October 15 and 16, bringing hurricane-force winds in excess of 100mph across southern England and northern France which had not been forecast.
Photographers from the Watford Observer travelled across our area the following morning to capture the scenes of devastation and disruption, with hundreds of trees uprooted, some roads impassable while some people woke to find their homes and cars extensively damaged.
Here is another opportunity to look back at these pictures from our archive as we recall the aftermath of one of the worst storms to hit this country.
