There were almost 400 burglaries across Hertfordshire last month - a spike of 23 per cent compared to the same period last year, latest figures have shown.
Herts Police issued a warning to homeowners after 385 break-ins, including 80 burglaries targeting garages and outbuildings, compared to 311 the previous December.
The latest statistics sparked the force into issuing prevention advice to tackle the problem, such as ensuring garages and sheds have adequate security.

Shed doors should have “hasp and staple” locks at the top and bottom, as well as extra locks either side of metal garage doors.
Homeowners should reduce access to their rear garden by padlocking gates and securing wheelie bins so they can’t be used to climb in.
Garden tools should be marked with a postcode and house number, and locked away after use.
Bicycles should also be kept in secure sheds or garages, and registered with the Bike Register scheme.
