Callous burglars "ransacked the whole house" after a break-in that had "heartbreaking consequences".
Around 7.15pm on Saturday, September 23, the property in Station Road, Kings Langley, was targeted by two young males, the victim's daughter said on social media.
Herts Police confirmed it has been reported to them but it is not yet known what has been stolen. Enquiries are continuing, a spokesperson said.
While providing some details online, the daughter added: "Just wanted to say please be alert to young men knocking at doors."
The post sparked an outpouring of anger and sympathy online, with one contributor writing: "I'm so sorry to hear this news, I do hope your mum and dad are ok and these vile people are brought to justice."
The victims were reportedly out at the time, with the suspects knocking before waiting around for a few minutes before breaking in.
"I'm so sorry to hear this," another wrote. "It's devastating people can be that callous. Hope you are all ok."
Information can be reported to Herts Police via their website or by calling non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 41/76435/23.
