Firefighters were called to the scene of a “large” allotment fire as two “booms” were heard.
At around 9.15pm yesterday (September 18) a shed at Brightwell Allotments in Scammell Way caught fire.
A local was alerted to the blaze by their dog barking in the garden and, after going outside, saw “flares in the sky” and “lots of smoke” before calling Herts Fire and Rescue.

“There was a boom sound like a tiny explosion,” they added.
“After that I went out and went around to Scammel Way to have a closer look. There was a lot of smoke. That’s when a second boom or explosion happened.”
They said that Herts Fire and Rescue arrived “promptly”.
The fire service confirmed that three engines from Watford and Garston stations found a large fire to the rear of the allotments after being called out.
A spokesperson added: “Firefighters worked to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby properties, before extinguishing the flames.
“The fire was out by 9:55pm. Nobody was hurt, and the fire is believed to have started accidentally.”
