A man has been fined more than £3,000 and given 10 penalty points on his driving licence after a car crash.

At around 11.45pm on Saturday, June 10, officers came across a heavily damaged Ford Focus in Hempstead Road, Kings Langley.

The driver, Chirag Chauhan, 34, from Lyon Park Avenue in Wembley, was sitting inside the car with the engine running.

He was arrested at the scene for failing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis and taken into police custody.

It was later discovered that he had crashed into a parked vehicle near Shendish Manor Hotel in Hemel Hempstead, causing damage so severe that the vehicle was written off. Damage was also caused to the wall of a nearby property.

Chauhan was charged with failing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis and failing to stop after a road accident.

He appeared before St Albans Magistrates’ Court on Friday, September 8, where he pleaded guilty to both offences.

Chauhan was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £1,229 and pay costs of £85.

PC Jason Appleby from the Dacorum intervention team said: “I hope this serves as a warning that we can and will take action against those who are suspected of drink driving, even without a specimen of breath.”
