Traffic on the M1 had to be stopped due to a police-led incident near Watford.
Lanes in both directions were stopped between junction 4, Elstree, and junction 5, Watford, on Sunday, August 6, in the evening.
Police confirmed it was due to a concern for welfare and the man was brought to safety.
National Highways confirmed they were notified to hold the traffic at 8.22pm.
At its peak, congestion stretched for two miles north and southbound. Both carriageways were reopened at 9.46pm.

The Herts Fire and Rescue service was called at around 7.03pm on Saturday, August 5, to reports that a Citroen was on fire in the Watford Junction Station car park in Station Road.
One fire engine from Watford fire station was sent to the scene where the crew found the car “well alight” a spokesperson said.
They added: “Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, which started accidentally.
“Nobody was hurt in the incident.”
The police confirmed that road closures were put in place and the car was recovered by 8.40pm.
