A car caught fire on the M1 causing miles of congestion.

The Herts Fire and Rescue Service was called at 2.35pm to reports of a grey BMW 520D on fire, northbound between junctions 6A and 7.

Three fire engines were sent to the scene, where crews found one car alight in lane 2 of the northbound carriageway.

The carriageway was closed while firefighters tackled the fire and moved the vehicle to the hard shoulder.

Crews made the scene safe and left at around 3:55pm.

The fire led to two miles of congestion on approach because two lanes on the M1 were closed between junctions 6A and 8 northbound.

The East of England Ambulance Trust was told to stand down and therefore did not attend.

It came after two other vehicles were on fire along the M25 between junctions 24 and 25 causing up to six miles of congestion.

A spokesperson from the London Fire Brigade said they were called at 2.36pm and the fire was brought under control by 2.54pm.

Two fire engines from Enfield Fire Station and a fire engine from Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Service attended the scene.

National Highways has announced that all lanes are now open on the M1 and M25.
