Emergency services have been called to the scene of a “multi-vehicle-crash” in Hertfordshire.

Two of the three southbound lanes between Junctions 4 and 2 of the A1M, near Hatfield Tunnel, were closed this morning (August 1) due to the crash.

The closure caused “severe” 40-minute delays against expected traffic, according to National Highways, and there were approximately 4 miles of congestion on approach to the scene.

Update

Lanes 1 and 2 remain closed for recovery and clear up works, as of 8.30am, after the “multi-vehicle collision”.

Five vehicles were involved in the crash, near junction 4, but although the ambulance service attended no injuries were reported.

No arrests were made.

The closure is expected to be cleared by 9.30am and normal traffic is expected by 10.30am.

National Highways advised motorists to check their route before travelling this morning.

The lane closures were first confirmed by the government-owned highways agency at 7.31am, when there were around 25 minutes of delays.

Herts Police have been contacted for more information. Update to follow.
