- Herts Police shut the M1 between junctions 6 and 8, in both directions.
- The southbound closure has now been lifted.
- It followed what National Highways has described as a "serious incident".
- Two separate crashes occurred, one involving two vehicles travelling south and one, shortly afterwards, involving a lorry and a pedestrian.
- Before police arrived at the scene of the first crash the occupants had left.
- According to National Highways "complex investigation and recovery work is being carried out and the closures are expected to remain in place until late this afternoon".
- The following junctions have also been closed: Junction 8 travelling south, Junction 6 travelling north, junction 21A of the M25-North Orbital Road, slips from the M25 that join the M1.
- The pedestrian involved in the second crash was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
- National Highways has announced that all closures have been lifted.
